Man Pleads Not Guilty of Vehicular Manslaughter

On Thursday, October 1, a driver accused of vehicular manslaughter of two small children pleaded not guilty.

According to Reno Police, 66 year old Sheldon Berg was released pending the next court date but is not allowed to drive until his trial.

The incident happened in June this year when Berg was driving a Subaru west on Brentwood Avenue in south Reno and failed to stop at an intersection. He then crashed into a home on Princess Avenue, near Vassar Street which was occupied by a mother, her two year old son, four year old daughter and her teenage niece. The two youngest children were killed.

During the police investigation, Berg had been in another crash in January 2013 where he suffered some sort of medical incident and it is possible the same thing happened this time, However, his license has been suspended six times since 2002, three times he surrendered it voluntarily and on another two occasions he refused to comply with restrictions and it was suspended, He also once refused to have a medical examination so it was suspended. After each suspension he did take the correct steps to have it reinstated. At present it appears that he has to have a yearly check up by a doctor to clear him to drive.

According to police neither alcohol nor drugs were involved in the accident, nor did Berg know the family involved.
