On Sunday, February 21st, an accident on the 215 Beltway left one woman dead and nine more in hospital.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol, the accident happened shortly after 9 p.m. on the Beltway westbound on ramp, from Interstate 15 northbound, near Las Vegas Boulevard.

A white Ford E350 Econoline van was traveling at speed in the rain, which was too fast for the conditions, and the driver lost control. The van then spun and left the roadway, crossing a concrete median and overturning. A Las Vegas woman, 48 year old Sheila Williams was seated in the second row of the van and even though she was wearing a seat belt she was ejected from the van through the windshield and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nine of the remaining occupants of the van suffered non life threatening injuries and they were taken to University Medical Center.

The beltway was closed going west until the following morning while the accident was investigated.

This was Nevada Highway Patrol Southern Command’s ninth fatal accident so far this year.

On Monday night there was a hit and run accident which sent a North Las Vegas police officer to the hospital.

According to North Las Vegas police, the accident happened shortly after 8.30 p.m. on Monday on the southbound Interstate 15. The officer was approaching the Washington Avenue off ramp in the right travel lane, and a car cut him off. The officer braked hard and the bike spun and fell over resulting in the officer being ejected.

Luckily Las Vegas radio DJ and hip hop artist Miles Low saw the accident, stopped traffic, and tried to get the officer to remain calm. His actions prevented the officer from being run over by another vehicle.

The driver of the car stopped, but only for a second before speeding away. The vehicle is described as a four door sedan, which is possibly green.

The 45 year old officer was taken to University Medical Center with non life threatening injuries and was expected to be released within a day or two.

There was plenty of rain in the Valley last week and in fact the .46 inches of rain on Sunday, beat the record for January 11 of .29 inches which was set in 1949.

However, the wet roads led to an enormous number of crashes with troopers responding to 143 just in that one day, with 43 resulting in injuries. In the week as a whole, they responded to an average of 36 crashes a day.

In one of the accidents on Sunday, a trooper was in his vehicle at the scene of a crash on U.S. Highway 95, near Eastern Avenue, when a gold Ford 500 collided with a blue Toyota Camry and the trooper’s marked patrol car and then rolled over.

The 34 year old trooper and two women in the Ford sedan were taken to University Medical Center with non life threatening injuries.

Some lanes on U.S. Highway 95, Interstate 15 and the 215 Beltway were closed following 16 of the crashes and there were more than 60 accidents in surface streets in the 12 hours after 6 a.m. on Sunday.

According to meteorologists, the storm which affected Southern California all the way into the southern part of Nevada slowly moved to the northeast valley on Sunday morning.

On Monday a young boy was seriously injured having been hit by a vehicle.

According to Las Vegas police, the accident happened shortly after 3.30 p.m. when 55 year old Mara Swenson was driving westbound on Owens Avenue in a 1998 Lincoln Navigator. As she approached the intersection of Linnbaker Lane, close to Lamb Boulevard, there were two boys crossing the road, and not in a crosswalk.

Swenson tried to avoid striking them, but she hit one boy, who was ten years old and the other left the scene. The boy who was hit was taken to University Medical Center’s Trauma Center with what were considered to be serious injuries, including a possible broken femur and minor head injuries.

Swenson was not injured; however she was charged and booked with driving under the influence.

The incident remains under investigation.

A man was killed having been hit by two vehicles when walking in a crosswalk in front of the Bonanza Casino.

According to police, 54 year old Vincent Yowell of Reno was walking on North Virginia Street at about 4.30 a.m. on Monday. He did not activate the crosswalk lights but started to cross the road and was hit by two cars. The first hurt him and knocked him to the ground and the second hit and killed him. The police have said that the first driver remained at the scene and called for help but they were looking for the driver of the second car, which they said was a silver or light grey 4 door, passenger car.

Later in the week the driver of the second car was found and he said that he thought he had run over a large animal. Police said he was cooperating with investigators and although he was originally thought to be a hit and run suspect, due to his cooperation and statement, the case is being turned over to the district attorney to consider if charges are warranted.

A crash on Thursday in the northwest has left one person dead.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the crash happened shortly after 5.30 p.m. near the off ramp of US 95 and W. Craig Road. A Lincoln Navigator was traveling south on US 95 when the driver, a 38 year old female, lost control and the SUV crashed into a fence and stopped in front of a storm drain.

NHP went on to say that she died at the scene and have not yet released her identity. Investigators suspect that she may have been impaired and reminded that especially in the holiday season, people should not get behind the wheel after they have been drinking, nor if impaired due to illegal drugs or prescription medication.

This was the 58th fatal crash Nevada Highway Patrol has investigated this year and the 28th involving fatality involving some sort of impairment.

In the first two weeks of November there has been a rash of fatal accidents on the roads in Southern Nevada.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol, a total of 20 people were killed in 13 days at the beginning of November, which makes it the deadliest period in Clark County so far this year.

Six of those who died perished within a single 21 hour period with another three dying less than 24 hours later.

Law enforcement officials cannot say exactly why this has occurred, but think it could be due to several reasons.

It now is becoming darker earlier, so the visibility is reduced; the weather is cooler so more people are walking, leading to pedestrian deaths, especially as their winter clothing tends to be darker making them harder to see; there are more vehicles on the road as people get ready for the holidays and the holiday season also leads to increased alcohol use and a higher level of stress and lack of concentration among drivers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 700 people nationally are expected to be injured or killed every single day in the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day due to drunken driving crashes, which is two to three times higher than the rest of the year.

A Lincoln teenager died near Las Vegas on Saturday lunchtime.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, Lincoln residents, 19 year old Mike Guerrero-Sisneroz and his fiancé, McKayla Holmes, aged 18, were driving north on IR 15, just a few miles north of Las Vegas around noon. Sisneroz then lost control of the vehicle, which entered the median, hit a barrier and rolled over. The reasons why he lost control are not yet known.

Sisneroz was pronounced dead at the scene and McKayla, who was four months pregnant, is now recovering from her injuries in the hospital. She is said to have a fractured femur but is expected to recover and there appear to be no injuries to her unborn child.

Sisneroz who was the oldest of seven children, went to Lincoln East High School.

Police went on to say that the crash is still under investigation.

A car crash late on Saturday night has left a man dead.

According to Las Vegas police, the accident happened around 10.30 p.m. on Gowan Road, near Walnut Road, when a 23 year old male was driving eastbound in a 1992 Honda Civic together with two passengers. As he was approaching New Horizon Avenue he lost control of the vehicle and drove onto the dirt shoulder, then back onto the road, across the westbound lanes of Gowan and hit a wooden power post with the passenger side of the car.

Police went on to say that the driver and one of the passengers, Marcos Luna aged 20 from North Las Vegas, were taken to University Medical Center with serious injuries. Luna then died at the hospital. The third passenger, a 20 year old man, refused medical assistance and left the scene.

At present it is unknown if alcohol or speed was a factor in the accident and it remains under investigation.

This is Metro’s 78th traffic-related fatality for the year.

A driver of a Ford Expedition sued the driver of a pickup truck after he caused a car accident by making a left hand turn in front of him.

In June 2010, the driver of the Ford Expedition was traveling southbound on Rubidoux Boulevard in Riverside. He was about to approach the intersection at 28th Street when a Ford pickup truck crossed into his path making a left turn onto 28th street. The pickup truck pulled right in front of his vehicle and he was unable to stop and crashed into the pickup truck. Police were called to the scene and an ambulance arrived to take him to a local hospital to treat his injuries.

He suffered numerous serious injuries including a fractured knee cap and ribs, a sprained ankle and several cuts and abrasions to his face plus broken teeth.  The case was subsequently settled for $998,000.
